Gossip
People who gossip are in the habit of spreading personal information or rumors about others. It may seem fun to spread gossip, but it is not a good habit to get into. Gossip is typically some sort of shocking news about someone. This shocking news is often hurtful. Whether at school, in the workplace, or in society, all gossip is basically the same. Someone tells one friend what he overheard about someone else. Then that person spreads what he heard to the next person, and so on. The original story usually changes many times before it finally makes its way back to the subject of the gossip.
When you are the subject of gossip, the best way to deal with it is not to get upset. If you act upset, everyone will believe that the rumor is true. Even if the rumor is true, your personal life is not anyone else’s business. Stay calm and maybe even laugh at what is being said about you. It may not be easy, but sometimes ignoring gossip is the best way to end it. Once everyone realizes that the gossips are not to be trusted, their lives will become as miserable as the lives of the people they gossiped about.
Sleeping on the Job
For many people, it is not easy to get enough sleep at night. Their lives are hectic, filled with many things that must be done before they can fall asleep. As a result, they may fall asleep on the bus or the train the next day. This is perfectly natural. But falling asleep the next day at school or on the job is not acceptable. For thousands of people around the world who don’t get enough sleep each night, falling asleep on the job is a big worry.
For pilots, taxi drivers, or train engineers, it would be more than a little embarrassing to fall asleep on the job. It would be a matter of life and death for them and their passengers. Therefore, there are laws about how much they can work at one time. Pilots, drivers, and engineers have to be able to get enough rest between shifts. Because of these laws, many people have gotten fired for falling asleep at work. Some of them have fought to get their jobs back. They say it cannot be proven that they were actually asleep. Maybe they were just resting their eyes. However, in the case of bus drivers and other transportation personnel, their jobs are gone for good. After all, sleep is something that should be done at home─not when you are piloting a jet above the Pacific Ocean.
