As a Ph.D. student, I was excited when a friend proposed we collaborate on a project. I asked my supervisor for permission and he happily agreed, but advised that we should define our expected contributions and credit before starting. I didn’t heed his words. I wasn’t going to negotiate with a fast friend; I fully trusted my collaborator to give me fair credit, and I did not want to come across as entitled. Everything went fine. We completed and published the work as co-authors. Years passed, and I forgot my supervisor’s advice.

As a Ph.D. student, I was excited when a friend proposed we collaborate on a project.
📖 collaborate /kəˈlabəreɪt/
vi. to work with someone else for a special purpose A collaborate with B to do sth / A and B collaborate on/in (doing) sth,这个意思下,collaborate相当于cooperate,eg:[A collaborate with B to do sth] A German company collaborated with a Swiss firm to develop the product. / [A and B collaborate on (doing) sth] Two writers collaborated on the script for the film. / [A and B collaborate in (doing) sth] The British and Italian police collaborated in catching the terrorists.
I asked my supervisor for permission and he happily agreed, but advised that we should define our expected contributions and credit before starting.
📖 supervisor /ˈsuː.pə.vaɪ.zər/
n. A supervisor is a person who supervises activities or people, especially workers or students. eg:Each student has a supervisor to advise on the writing of the dissertation.
📖 define /dɪˈfaɪn/
vt. to explain and describe the meaning and exact limits of something eg:Your rights and responsibilities are defined in the citizens’ charter. / I’d hate to feel that I was defined by (= that my life got its meaning and importance only from) my job.
📖 credit /ˈkred.ɪt/
🌰n. praise, approval, or honour get the credit for sth/doing sth eg:She got no credit for solving the problem. take credit for sth/doing sth eg:Her boss took credit for it/took (all) the credit instead. to sb’s credit eg:To her (great) credit, she admitted she was wrong. give sb (the) credit for sth/doing sth eg:I gave him credit for (= thought that he would have) better judgment than he showed.
If people credit someone with an achievement or if it is credited to them, people say or believe that they were responsible for it. credit sb with sth/doing sth = credit sth to sb eg:The company is credited with inventing the industrial robot. / The invention of the industrial robot is credited to the company.
I didn’t heed his words.
📖 heed /hiːd/
vt. to pay attention to something, especially advice or a warning eg:The airline has been criticized for failing to heed advice/warnings about lack of safety routines.
I wasn’t going to negotiate with a fast friend; I fully trusted my collaborator to give me fair credit, and I did not want to come across as entitled.
📖 negotiate /nəˈɡoʊ.ʃi.eɪt/
vt. to have formal discussions with someone in order to reach an agreement with them (就…) eg:The government has refused to negotiate with the strikers.
之前我们还见过negotiate的另一个用法:vt. to deal with something difficult 解决(难题)。eg:The company’s had some tricky problems to negotiate in its first year in business.
📖 fast friends
two people who are very friendly for a long time 挚友
📖 come across
to behave in a way that makes people believe that you have a particular characteristic 常与介词as搭配,后面既可以接名词,也可以接形容词,eg:she came across as honest/an expert 她给人的印象很诚实/是个行家
📖 entitled /ɪnˈtaɪ.təld/
adj. feeling that you have the right to do or have what you want without having to work for it or deserve it, just because of who you are 有权做… eg:These kids are spoiled, entitled, self-absorbed, and apathetic.
